"The restoration of St. Paul's Cathedral following damage by fire in 1561 was not begun in earnest for many years after the fire. A new roof was constructed and other temporary repairs effected in 1561-1564, but very little more was done until 1620 when the King appointed commissioners 'to make discovery of the decays...to consider fit and proper means to carry on repair'...Restoration work continued until ca. 1642...when the cathedral was turned...
