Episcopal visitations: visitation books list parishes in the diocese arranged by archdeaconry (parishes in the county of Essex arranged by deanery), and recorded names of persons from each parish summoned to or attending the visitation, i.e. incumbents, curates, churchwardens and sidesmen. "The restoration of St. Paul's Cathedral following damage by fire in 1561 was not begun in earnest for many years after the fire. A new roof was constructed and other temporary repairs effected in 1561-1564, but very little more was done until 1620 when the King appointed commissioners 'to make discovery of the decays...to consider fit and proper means to carry on repair'...Restoration work continued until ca. 1642...when the cathedral was turned...

Ordination papers are letters testimonial and related papers for the ordination of deacons and priests, including letters testimonial, nomination papers etc. for curates, preachers, lecturers and schoolmasters.

The first set of foreign registers (v. 1-13) are international memoranda of registrations of baptisms, marriages and burials (also a few births and deaths) overseas. The Library has v. 11-12 of this set. The second set of foreign registers (v. 1-95) are certificates of baptisms , marriages and burials solemnised chiefly at diplomatic missions and transmitted to the Bishop of London for registration and filing. Completed queries returned by the incumbants of parishes in Middlesex, Essex, Hertfordshire, Suffolk, and Buckinghamshire concerning frequency of divine service and of the administration of holy communion, catechism, number of families in the parish, non-residence, employment of curates, parish schools and charities. These records were transmitted to the Diocesan register by diplomatic channels, i.e. the Foreign Office.

Subscription books contain subscriptions and/or declarations made by the following classes of person: clergy instituted and collated; curates, lecturers, school-masters, physicians and surgeons licensed; persons ordained postal officials; chaplains, lecturers, missionaries, schoolmasters licensed for the Bishop's jurisdiction overseas including naval chaplains; deans of St. Pauls, parish clerks licensed; and sextons licensed.
